Collection Description

Collection Title
Thomas Harper Programmes: London (1821-1895)
A collection of programmes from performances given by Thomas Harper in London, 1821-1895. The volume is labelled “1824-95” on its spine; however, the first programme in the volume dates from 1821. The majority of programmes are from concerts given by Thomas Harper jn (1816-1898), and some of the programmes are extremely likely to have been from performances by his father – also called Thomas Harper – who lived from 1786 to 1853. A few programmes in the collection contain analytical programme notes, and some programmes contain printed music.

The collection contains programmes from a wide variety of venues: however, there are a significant number of programmes from St. James’s Hall. A substantial amount of programmes from St. James’s Hall feature concerts organised by the Sacred Harmonic Society.

The volume contains programs from the following venues:

Westminster Abbey; St. Saviour, Southwark; London Tavern, Bishopsgate Street; King’s Theatre; St. George’s Church, Camberwell; Exeter Hall; St. James’s Hall; Queen’s Concert Rooms, Hanover Square; Ladbroke Hall; Brixton Hall; Buckingham Palace; Merchant Taylor’s Hall; Great Assembly Hall, Mile End Road; South Kensington Museum [rebuilt and renamed in 1899 as the Victoria and Albert Museum]; Guildhall [Corporation of London]; Tower Bridge; Whitehall Rooms, Hotel Metropole

There is also a programme from the following institution, where the venue is uncertain:

Anemoic Union

The programmes are arranged chronologically.
