Collection Description

Collection Title
Scrapbook of vocal concerts (1850-1859)
Description
A collection of one scrapbook containing ca. 120 programmes, dating from 1850 to 1859. The programmes are from concerts chiefly given in London, but the collection also includes programmes from the provinces, Europe and South America. A wide variety of different concert venues are represented by this collection - for a list see below - but the collection includes a number of programmes from Willis's Rooms and the Dudley Gallery at Egyptian Hall. A significant amount of programmes in the collection relate to performances, often 'matinee musicale', given in private houses. A few programmes contain no venue information, or incomplete venue information such as a street name but no number. The programmes in the collection largely relate to concerts containing vocal music or a mixture of vocal and instrumental items: however the collection also includes a few programmes from opera performances. The volume also includes a few newspaper cuttings and advertisements for concerts. The majority of items are fixed into the volume, but there are a few loose programmes.
