Collection Title
London Musical Festival (1911)
Description
A collection of programmes from the London Musical Festival, 1911. The programmes relate to concerts given at the Queen’s Hall, London. The collection is a complete set of programmes from concerts given during the period 22nd – 27th May, 1911. The programmes relate to orchestral concerts and performances of choral works. The orchestra involved in the festival was the Queen’s Hall Orchestra. The majority of items in each concert were conducted by Henry Wood. However, some premieres of works given in the festival were conducted by their composer: these composer/conductors include Elgar, Walford Davies, Granville Bantock and Percy Pitt. The collection contains programmes which include a number of premieres of British music – including for example the first performance of Elgar’s second symphony – as well as contemporary continental music from composers such as Richard Strauss. Choral works performed at the festival included two large-scale performances of oratorios. The programmes list the choirs which were involved with various choral items performed at the festival, which were all provincial groups: Norwich Festival Chorus, Sheffield Festival Chorus, Leeds Choral Union and Sheffield Boy’s Choir all performed as part of the festival.
