Collection Description

Collection Title
National Gallery etc. (1935-1961)
A miscellaneous collection of programmes. The collection consists of a scrapbook, with programmes attached by glue, paperclip or loosely inserted. A substantial amount of the collection, ca. 130 programmes, consists of programmes from concerts that took place at the National Gallery in London. These date from 1939 to 1945 and are from the War-time concerts series. A majority, but not all, of the programmes from the National Gallery feature Ivor Newton as a pianist or accompanist.

The programmes from venues other than the National Gallery concerts all feature Ivor Newton as a pianist or accompanist. These are from a wide variety of venues, in London, the provinces and the rest of the world. The programmes date from 1935 to 1961, with a predominance of programmes dating from 1940 to 1945. The collection contains programmes from the following venues:

Laing Art Gallery and Museum, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; Museum and Art Gallery, Leicester; 5 Langford Close, St. John’s Wood; Royal Dublin Society; Theatre Royal, Bristol; Banqueting Hall, Old Palace, Croydon; Royal Academy of Music; Wigmore Hall; Music for all, Cairo; Melksham Town Hall; Town hall, Oxford; Royal Albert Hall; Royal Chapel of all Saints, Windsor Great Park; Calmeyergatens Misjonshus, Oslo; Town hall, Chelsea; Regent hall, Nottingham; Monmouth school for girls; Diligentia, Den Haag; British Council Innsbruck; Civic Hall, Wolverhampton; Die Osterreichisch – Britische Gesellschaft, Salzburg.

In addition, the collection contains programmes from the following series, where no venue is listed, but the venue can be assumed:
Marlborough college subscription concerts: Marlborough College
Exeter College Music Society: Exeter College, Oxford

There are also programmes from the following institutions, where venue is uncertain:

Salzburger Festspiele; RAM club; American Theatre at the exposition (possibly Brussels); Austrian legation (no country given, possibly London branch)

The collection divided between National Gallery concerts then non-National Gallery Concerts. The National Gallery programmes are approximately in chronological order. The non-National Gallery programmes are loosely in chronological order, with some items entirely out of sequence.
